Dylan Larkin will not play for the Red Wings again
Dylan Larkin quit on Detroit.
The short version
Dylan Larkin told the Detroit Red Wings through his agent that he will not play for them again. Detroit suspended him without pay until a trade gets done, and any deal needs his approval.
By the numbers
The trend: From 2021 to 2026 Larkin scored 160 goals, 37 more than any other Red Wing over that stretch.
The Detroit Red Wings suspended Dylan Larkin without pay on Thursday after his agent told the team he will not play for Detroit again. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Larkin has informed the team he will no longer play for the Red Wings, and that the club is disappointed by the decision.
Larkin asked for a trade in the offseason and was removed as captain on Sept. 11. He has five seasons left on an eight-year, $69.6 million contract that pays $8.7 million a year, and any trade needs his approval.
He has 649 points in 818 games, 278 goals, and has scored 30 or more in each of the past five seasons. From 2021 to 2026 he scored 160 goals, 37 more than any other Red Wing. Detroit is 6-4-3 and has not made the playoffs since 2016, the longest active drought in the NHL. Loyalty runs both ways or it does not.
The bottom line
Loyalty runs both ways or it does not. Detroit stripped the C, Larkin walked out, and now both sides need a trade to save face.
Bar argument
Is Larkin right to force his way out, or did he quit on his team?
